Leonard Cohen once wrote, “there’s a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in.”
It’s impossible to find a silver lining on the anniversary of the deadliest massacre of Jews since the Shoah. But UCLA’s community is a source of solace, inspiration, and resilience amidst unimaginable grief and a hostile campus. At UCLA’s memorial vigil, I was moved by student speakers and steadfastly supported by our community. Upon receiving the scans of the film photos I took during the memorial events of October 7th, I thought “this is why I do photography.” These photos are a testimony to the light of 1,200 yartzehit candles. I hope that they can be a crack that lets more light in during these difficult times of hardship and conflict in the Middle East.
