On Saturday, October 27th, a gunman opened fire in a Pittsburgh synagogue killing 11 innocent Jews and injuring 6 others. The attack occurred at Tree of Life Congregation in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh. With the occurrence of this tragedy, the Jewish community and beyond came to immediately support this tragedy. In light of this tragedy, it is time to support the Jewish community, stop antisemitism, and perform small acts to bring light to a time of such darkness. Here a just a few small ways to show your support for the Jewish community in this time of need:
1. Wear a kippah
Wearing a kippah is used as a sign of respect to G-d; a symbol to show that he is above us watching. The kippah has also become a distinct symbol between Jews and non-Jews. Wearing this will symbolize that you are proud of your religion.
2. Celebrate Shabbat
Shabbat is known as the Jewish people’s day of rest. On this day we light candles, rest, and reflect on the happenings of the week. Using this time to reflect and spend time with family is a mitzvah, and honors the people lost in Pittsburgh on Shabbat.
3. Wear a Jewish Star necklace
The Star of David has been a symbol associated with Judaism for as long as people can remember. It has grown to become a symbol of Jewish communities around the world, even used as a symbol on the Israeli flag. Wearing the star around your neck is another way to publicly support the Jewish community.
4. Go to events/vigils/and fundraisers
Tree of Life vigils, walks, fundraisers and events have been occurring all around the country – on college campuses, in towns, schools, etc. Communities are inviting others to stand together and remember the lives lost in the attack.
5. Writing poetry
Poetry is a means to self expression. Writing poetry in memory of others and sharing it to the Jewish community and world over social media can help share your ideas, call for change, and honor the Pittsburgh community.
6. Changing your profile picture on Facebook
Shortly after the shooting occurred, Jews around the country began putting a filter on their Facebook profile picture saying “#Together Against Antisemitism”. This is a way to publicly support the Pittsburg community and unite as Jews to fight antisemitism.
